AI Supercharges Cyberattacks Across African Continent
A recent INTERPOL report reveals that cybercrime in Africa has reached alarming new heights, with artificial intelligence playing a central role in at least 55% of all reported incidents. Financial losses more than doubled from 2024 to 2026, soaring from $192 million to $484 million.
The comprehensive 40-page report, based on data from 36 African countries, indicates that cybercrime has evolved into an industrial-scale operation with attackers leveraging AI across all phases of attacks—from initial reconnaissance and phishing campaigns to extortion attempts and evasion tactics.

The Industrialization of Cybercrime
What’s particularly concerning is how cybercriminals are applying AI at machine speed—analyzing data, generating phishing campaigns and evading security measures with unprecedented efficiency. This contrasts sharply with the fragmented response capacity across many African nations.
“Cybercrime has emerged as one of the most significant criminal threats to the region,” warned Neal Jetton, Director of INTERPOL’s Cybercrime unit. “AI is automating every stage of a cyberattack from reconnaissance and phishing to extortion and evasion.”
While coordinated operations like Serengeti 2.0 and Contender 3.0 have yielded successes—including over 1,500 arrests and the recovery of more than $100 million in assets—these highlight the scale of the challenge rather than its resolution.
The report emphasizes the need for standardized digital forensic capabilities, enhanced cross-border cooperation, investment in AI literacy among law enforcement and robust public-private partnerships to address this evolving threat landscape effectively.
