Airtel Africa Bets on Network Expansion with Major 2026 Investments
Airtel Africa is set to allocate the majority of its $1.1 billion capital expenditure for 2026 towards fibre rollouts and spectrum acquisition, aiming to enhance network quality across its 14 African markets.
According to CEO Sunil Taldar in a recent interview with Arise News, this strategic investment will address the growing demand for high-speed internet driven by increasing smartphone adoption rates. With more Africans accessing mobile networks, Airtel aims to provide robust 4G and 5G infrastructure to support data usage.
“If you look at Africa, we see a huge opportunity with smartphone penetration,” Taldar explained. “To realize this opportunity, what we need to do is expand coverage.” He noted that the company’s investments prioritize expanding network reach to meet rising demand.
Strategic Investments in Key Areas
The $1.1 billion capex will be distributed across:
- Spectrum Acquisition: Securing additional bandwidth for mobile growth
- Fibre Optic Rollout: Expanding high-speed backbone infrastructure
- Network Upgrades: Improving existing infrastructure to handle increased traffic
A recent example of this strategy includes securing regulatory approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for a $37 million renewal of its 900MHz spectrum license, which will extend network validity until November 2041.
Addressing Infrastructure Challenges
Taldar also highlighted ongoing challenges such as fibre cuts and vandalism, which remain significant threats to reliable service delivery. Despite telecom infrastructure being designated as critical national assets, equipment damage continues to cause frequent outages - averaging 500 fibre cuts per week in the first quarter of 2026.
Airtel is urging greater protection efforts from communities and authorities, emphasizing that safeguarding network infrastructure benefits everyone through improved connectivity.
Strong Financial Performance Fuels Expansion
The company’s robust financial performance - with Q2 2026 revenue reaching $1.85 billion (up 31% year-on-year) - provides a solid foundation for these expansion plans. Data revenue continues to be a key growth driver, alongside voice and mobile money services.
Airtel’s customer base has grown to 189 million across its African operations, with data users nearing 90 million, demonstrating the increasing reliance on digital connectivity across the continent.
