Mobile Payments Powerhouse Set to Go Public
Airtel Africa’s mobile money business, Airtel Money, is gearing up for an initial public offering (IPO) that could value the unit at approximately $10 billion. The listing on the London Stock Exchange follows a previous postponement due to geopolitical tensions and unfavorable market conditions.
The decision to list in London comes as several companies have delayed IPO plans amid ongoing global uncertainty. Airtel Money’s revenue reached $1.36 billion in the financial year ending March 2026, representing a 36.3% increase from the previous year. The service boasts a customer base of 54.1 million users across East and Francophone Africa, with Nigeria contributing 2.7 million subscribers.
Strategic Shift Amidst Geopolitical Landscape
The shift to London as the preferred listing venue highlights how global events influence financial markets. With tensions in the Middle East impacting investment decisions, London has emerged as a more stable option for companies seeking public funding.
Mobile Money’s Growing Significance
Airtel Money’s IPO reflects the increasing importance of mobile payments in Africa’s digital economy. Telecom operators are expanding beyond traditional voice and data services into areas like digital remittances, merchant payments, and savings products—creating new revenue streams and driving customer growth.
Across the continent, other telecom giants are similarly leveraging their mobile money platforms: MTN with MoMo PSB, Safaricom with M-Pesa, Ethio Telecom with Telebirr, and Maroc Telecom with MT Cash represent just a few examples of this trend.
