A Greek multinational, AMACO Energy Group, is proposing a novel solution to one of the most pressing challenges facing Africa’s burgeoning AI ambitions: securing reliable power supply. Their HERCULES project combines electricity generation, cooling systems, and data center infrastructure into a single unit.
Addressing a Critical Need
The core innovation lies in reducing dependence on national grids by generating electricity close to where it is consumed. While the initial design utilizes liquefied natural gas (LNG), AMACO emphasizes that the system can later accommodate renewable energy sources and hydrogen fuel. This approach addresses concerns about grid capacity, transmission limitations, and access to reliable power—all common bottlenecks for data center development in Africa.
