Addressing Africa’s Critical Healthcare Workforce Shortage

Kenyan startup Ashacare Medical Solutions is revolutionizing healthcare provision across the continent with its workforce coordination platform, HealthShift. Founded in 2018 by Dr. Mercy Mutahi, the company aims to solve operational gaps that impact healthcare quality and accessibility.

Mutahi’s vision stemmed from her firsthand experiences in Kenya’s healthcare sector. “Many issues that appear to be about infrastructure or systems ultimately relate to workforce availability, qualifications, deployment, and accountability,” she explained to Disrupt Africa.

The World Health Organization estimates Africa faces a shortfall of 4.3 million health workers—a critical challenge for countries striving toward universal health coverage.

How HealthShift Works

HealthShift addresses this by creating a connected workforce ecosystem that:

  • Verifies healthcare professionals and facilities
  • Matches qualified staff to open positions
  • Tracks engagement, attendance, and performance
  • Provides access to locum services and team deployment tools

Unlike traditional staffing platforms, HealthShift offers comprehensive workforce management—from recruitment to ongoing evaluation.

“Our model shows not just ‘here’s a professional seeking work,’ but also ‘this is the verified facility, engagement details, and accountability information’,” Mutahi noted.

The platform has already onboarded over 55 hospitals and more than 1,500 verified professionals, filling nearly 6,000 shifts with an average time of less than six hours. This rapid adoption demonstrates HealthShift’s ability to meet real-world healthcare needs across multiple Kenyan counties.

The Network Effect

As more facilities and professionals join HealthShift, the platform creates a virtuous cycle:

  • Increased facility participation means more opportunities for professionals
  • More verified professionals give facilities greater choice and faster fulfillment

This network effect builds efficiency while ensuring quality through verification and accountability features.

Ashacare’s revenue model combines facility subscriptions with transaction fees, aligning financial growth with increased workforce activity—a sustainable approach as the company scales across Africa.
