From Tech Exec to Enterprise Leader

As technology leaders ascend the corporate ladder, they often discover that the skills which propelled their early success can become limitations in more complex roles. This transition requires a fundamental shift in mindset - from being the technical expert with all the answers to becoming an orchestrator who empowers others to deliver results.

Phil Dundas, CTO of AlTi Global and recent guest on The Tech Whisperers podcast, shares valuable insights into this evolution. Having led technology initiatives in some of the world’s most complex financial organizations, Dundas has repeatedly redefined what his job requires - learning when to delve into details and when to maintain strategic distance, shifting from direct control to creating enabling contexts.

The Foundation of Trust

Dundas emphasizes that trust is paramount for both client relationships and innovation. He notes the adage that “trust arrives on a bicycle and leaves in a sports car” - highlighting how it takes years to build but can be lost in moments.

When it comes to AI initiatives, Dundas argues that focusing on fundamentals like clean data and robust governance actually enables faster progress. Clear boundaries allow teams to innovate with greater confidence, knowing they operate within established frameworks.

Letting Go of Technical Control

The most significant shift for many technical leaders is moving from being the solution provider to empowering others to find their own solutions. Dundas explains that as your scope expands, your responsibility shifts from defining how things get done to ensuring the right outcomes are achieved - even if the execution differs from what you would have personally chosen.

He recalls a past experience where an elegant technical solution was ultimately rejected because it didn’t meet user needs. This taught him the importance of design thinking and involving stakeholders early in the process - prioritizing usability over technical perfection when appropriate.
