The continent’s unique transport landscape—including millions of motorcycles and commercial vehicles, vast distances between urban centers, inconsistent electricity access, and limited private parking—means Africa won’t follow a single EV charging model. Instead, multiple approaches are emerging:

Infrastructure Developments Across the Continent
South Africa leads with over 350 publicly operated charging points through GridCars, accounting for more than 70% of the country’s infrastructure. Companies like CHARGE are pioneering off-grid stations powered by solar generation and battery storage along major transport corridors.
Policy Support Fuels Growth
Several countries are actively supporting EV adoption through policy:
- Kenya requires at least 5% of parking spaces in new commercial developments to include EV charging
- Rwanda has published regulations governing both charging infrastructure and battery-swapping stations
- Nigeria integrated EVs into the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG & EV)
Battery Swapping: Africa’s Unique Opportunity
While passenger EVs are gaining traction, electric motorcycles represent a significant market opportunity. For commercial riders who rely on their vehicles for income, battery swapping offers a faster solution than traditional charging.
Spiro, an African electric mobility company, has deployed over 100,000 electric vehicles and 2,500 battery-swapping stations across multiple markets—including Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Benin, Togo, and Cameroon. The company’s $215 million funding round will support further network expansion and local manufacturing.
Africa’s EV infrastructure is moving beyond isolated projects toward coordinated networks that address the continent’s specific mobility needs.
