Media King Group Targets Nigerian Market with Innovative Connectivity Solution
A Croatian technology company, Media King Group, is preparing to launch its smart public WiFi system in Nigeria – a move that could transform urban connectivity across the country. Founded by Darko Kraljević in 2017, Media King has developed a cloud-managed WiFi architecture designed to overcome common challenges like network congestion and power instability.
The company’s approach differs from previous attempts at public WiFi in Nigeria, which often struggled with limited scalability and poor performance in high-density areas. Instead of relying on local access points that both connect users and process data, Media King shifts the heavy computing tasks to a centralized cloud system.
“We don’t want to just be local in Nigeria,” Kraljević explained. “Nigeria will be the starting point for our entire African market.” The company is partnering with Nigerian entrepreneur Charles Okpaleke to navigate the local landscape and expand its reach across the continent.
The technology has already been tested successfully in Croatia, where Media King deployed what was described as Europe’s fastest public WiFi network along Split’s waterfront. The system now supports major retail locations, transportation hubs, hospitals, and government buildings – all environments where traditional networks typically falter.
Addressing Key Challenges
Nigeria has seen numerous attempts at free public WiFi, but most have been hampered by high infrastructure costs and limited scalability. Media King’s cloud-based model addresses these concerns by:
- Reducing upfront investment: By shifting computing to the cloud, deployment costs are significantly lower.
- Improving performance: The centralized architecture handles traffic more efficiently, even with thousands of concurrent users.
- Enhancing resilience: Remote management and dynamic bandwidth allocation ensure consistent service quality.
“The real issue has always been that traditional infrastructure cannot meet real-world demand,” said Afam Anyika, CEO of Media King Nigeria. “Even when you solve for access, the quality drops as more people connect.”
The service will be free to end users, with revenue generated through advertising and data-driven services – a model that has proven successful in Croatia.
Beyond Connectivity
Media King’s platform offers additional benefits:
- Targeted content delivery: Businesses can reach potential customers with relevant promotions and information.
- Data insights for urban planning: Anonymized usage data helps cities optimize infrastructure and service delivery.
- Integrated communication channel: Each WiFi hotspot serves as a digital touchpoint for public announcements and community engagement.
