Cyberattacks Reach Record Highs Amidst Rising Ransomware Concerns

Organizations worldwide experienced a significant uptick in cyber threats during June 2026, with an average of 2,270 attacks per week—a 10% increase from May and a 17% jump year-over-year. This alarming trend underscores the evolving cybersecurity landscape facing businesses today.

Regional Vulnerabilities

While Latin America remains the most targeted region with 3,501 weekly attacks (up 27% from June 2025), Africa shows concerning patterns despite a 9% year-on-year decrease to 3,008 weekly attacks:

  • Angola: 4,890 attacks per organization
  • Nigeria: 4,361 attacks per organization
  • Kenya: 2,646 attacks per organization
  • South Africa: 2,065 attacks per organization

The government, energy/utilities, and financial services sectors in Africa experienced the highest attack volumes.

Ransomware Threat Intensifies

Ransomware incidents rose by 33% compared to June 2025, totaling 646 attacks. Business services were hit hardest (31% of victims), followed by consumer goods/services and industrial manufacturing:

  • Healthcare exposure reached 5.7%
  • Telecommunications risk at 5.1%
  • IT sector vulnerability at 4.1%

The Gentlemen ransomware group surpassed Qilin as the most active threat, accounting for 17% of published attacks—demonstrating how quickly new players can rise in the cybercriminal ecosystem.

Generative AI Risks Persist

Exposure through generative AI tools remains a significant concern. Nearly 40% of prompts from enterprise networks contained sensitive information:

  • One in 26 prompts carried high data leakage risk (3.9% globally)
  • Latin America had the highest exposure at 5.2%
  • Personal data appeared across 80% of affected organizations

With each organization utilizing an average of seven GenAI tools and users generating 78 prompts monthly, businesses must prioritize securing these emerging workflows.
