Connecting Ecosystems: TechBBQ Receives Funding for Nordic-African Collaboration
Danish non-profit TechBBQ has been awarded DKK4 million ($620,000) from the Novo Nordisk Foundation to establish a permanent platform connecting Nordic startups, investors, and corporations with tech talent in Africa and India. This initiative aims to facilitate investment, commercial partnerships, and technological collaboration between these regions.
The grant will specifically support the creation of the Nordic-Africa Innovation Summit and Nordic-India Innovation Summit, which will be integrated into TechBBQ’s annual conference. The move aligns with Europe’s broader strategy to strengthen economic ties with Africa and India amid concerns about global competitiveness and access to talent.
Investment Potential
The Nordic startup ecosystem has demonstrated significant investment appeal, attracting $7.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2025 and projecting over $9 billion for 2026. This region boasts more than 100 unicorns—private companies valued at over $1 billion each—and accounts for approximately 12% of all European venture capital despite representing a smaller population share.
“This backing will enable us to connect the Nordic ecosystem with India and Africa in a structured way,” said TechBBQ CEO Avnit Singh. “There’s immense untapped potential in these partnerships.”
Focus Areas
The project, which runs from August 2026 through December 2028, will prioritize three key areas aligned with the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s mission:
- Life sciences
- Deeptech and artificial intelligence (AI)
- Climate and agricultural technology
TechBBQ’s chief strategy officer Thomas Ebdrup emphasized that “the potential for joint development between the Nordics and these global markets has never been stronger.”
This initiative follows TechBBQ’s recent participation in Bharat Innovates 2026, a collaboration launched by the presidents of India and France to strengthen international innovation networks.
