Dr Amos Dangut Takes Helm as New WAEC Registrar

Dr Amos Josiah Dangut has officially assumed his role as the 14th registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). His five-year tenure began in October 2026, marking a significant moment for both Nigeria and the regional examination body.

The appointment was ratified by WAEC’s International Governing Board at its 74th annual meeting in Accra earlier this year. Dr Dangut succeeds Pateh Bah of The Gambia, who previously held the position.

A Career Dedicated to Education

Dr Dangut’s journey with WAEC began in 1998 after gaining experience as an examiner at St Louis College, Jos, from 1994. He has steadily risen through the ranks, holding various positions within the council’s headquarters and branch offices.

Prior to his appointment as registrar, Dr Dangut served as Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office since October 2023. During this time, he oversaw key initiatives aimed at improving examination delivery, security, and efficiency – including the rollout of computer-based WASSCE, question paper serialization, and digital marking systems.

Modernizing Examination Processes

Under Dr Dangut’s leadership, WAEC has implemented several technological advancements:

  • WAEC Digital Certificate Portal
  • WAEC E-Study Platform
  • Digital Records Archive
  • Advanced examination logistics and monitoring systems

The council highlighted his commitment to innovation as crucial factors in his selection for the registrar position.

Continuing a Legacy of Nigerian Leadership

Dr Dangut is the sixth Nigerian to lead WAEC since its establishment – following Prof. Vincent Chukwuemeka Ike (1971-1979), Dr S. A. Akeju (acting, 1979-1980), Dr S. A. Esezobor (1987-1995), Alhaja Mulikat A. Bello (2007-2012), and Dr Iyi Uwadiae (2012-2019).

With a background spanning education, administration, and technology leadership, Dr Dangut brings extensive experience to the role – positioning WAEC for continued growth and innovation under his guidance. He holds multiple degrees in agriculture, animal science, and education, complemented by service on various national educational boards.
