Equipping Tomorrow’s Leaders: Ecobank’s Digital Education Initiative

The Ecobank Group has concluded a three-year campaign to advance digital education across Africa, marking its 14th annual Ecobank Day by highlighting the critical need to equip young people with future-ready skills. This initiative aligns with the Group’s broader commitment to social impact and economic transformation.

Building Digital Infrastructure Across Sub-Saharan Africa

Through its Transforming Africa Through Education campaign, Ecobank has established 66 IT labs—surpassing its initial target of 40—across 32 countries. This expansion provides access to digital technology, AI, coding, and robotics training for over 46,414 children and young adults, exceeding the goal of 40,000.

From Annual Event to Sustainable Programme

What began as a single-day community action has evolved into a sustained investment in digital learning. The programme expanded strategically:

  • 2023: Focused on foundational digital literacy with computer labs and essential IT equipment
  • 2024: Introduced advanced skills like AI, coding, and robotics
  • 2025: Prioritized inclusion through assistive technologies and adapted learning environments

In Côte d’Ivoire, Ecobank partnered with Happy Coders Academy to foster creativity and problem-solving through technology. In Benin, the initiative built on existing support for the Centre for Inclusive Education for Deaf and Hearing Students (CAEIS), culminating in a donation of FCFA 6.6 million for a multimedia centre.

Connecting Social Impact to Economic Transformation

“This digital empowerment directly complements our strategic 2030 vision, where we committed $2.6 billion to scale women entrepreneurs and transform agricultural value chains,” said Jeremy Awori, CEO of Ecobank Group. “By equipping Africa’s youth today, we are preparing the innovators who will drive the continent’s next economic chapter.”

The digital education programme supports Ecobank’s broader commitments through its Ellevate programme (targeting $2 billion for women entrepreneurs) and investments in agricultural value chains ($600 million).

A Legacy of Community Upliftment

Since 1985, Ecobank Day has served as a platform for employees to invest directly in their communities. This year’s milestone reflects the Group’s founding conviction that commercial success should power social progress—a principle that extends beyond banking and into the digital realm.
