The financial technology sector continues to lead the way in attracting venture capital on the continent. According to Africa the Big Deal, fintech startups secured $556 million—or 41%—of the total $1.37 billion raised across Africa in H1 2026.
Notable Deals Driving Fintech’s Success
Several major funding rounds propelled this dominance:
- Flutterwave (Nigeria) closed a $100 million investment from Ripple as part of its Series E, reaching a valuation of $3.2 billion
- MNT-Halan (Egypt), another unicorn, raised $90 million across two tranches with Al Ahly Capital leading the latest round, pushing its valuation to $1.4 billion
- valU (Egypt) secured $64 million in debt financing from the Egyptian National Bank
- Nala (Tanzania) obtained $50 million in debt to support global expansion and neobank development
- LemFi (Nigeria) added a $30 million Series B extension to its existing funding
- Lucky (Egypt) raised $23 million in Series B to expand across North Africa
- BFREE (Nigeria) closed a $10 million equity round to acquire non-performing loans
