A Continent of Opportunity

For Mercy Erhiawarien, Director of International Programs at Halcyon startup accelerator, the answer to where she prefers to be—Lagos or Nairobi—is both. “It depends on the weather,” she explains with a laugh. This pragmatic approach reflects her unique perspective as someone who has straddled multiple worlds.

Born in Nigeria’s Delta State and raised largely in the United States, Erhiawarien embodies the diaspora return movement. Her experiences navigating two distinct realities have fueled her conviction that Africa holds immense untapped potential—particularly in sectors where conventional investors often overlook them.

“I believe opportunity exists in places where people rarely look,” she states plainly. This philosophy is evident in her work with Halcyon, which focuses on early-stage startups addressing critical social challenges across the continent.

A Balanced Perspective

What sets Erhiawarien apart is not just her international background but also her nuanced understanding of Africa’s development landscape. While acknowledging the vibrancy and innovation hubs like Lagos and Nairobi represent, she emphasizes that true opportunity often lies beyond these established centers.

“My father grew up in a rural village,” she recalls. “Learning from his experiences shaped my perspective on the need for people to have access to opportunity, regardless of where they’re born.” This empathy informs her investment approach—seeking out ventures that serve underserved communities and address systemic challenges.

Beyond Capital

Erhiawarien believes Africa’s greatest shortage isn’t entrepreneurial talent but rather patient capital—investment that supports long-term growth without demanding immediate returns. She envisions financial instruments that empower founders to take calculated risks, neighborhoods protected from speculative bubbles, and an Africa whose primary export is opportunity for its own people.

“When I think about the most impactful things we can do,” she concludes, “it’s not just about providing capital but creating ecosystems where businesses can thrive—where communities benefit directly from economic growth.” Her work at Halcyon embodies this holistic approach, nurturing startups that generate both financial returns and positive social impact.
