Gate Launches Localized Payment Channels in Key African Markets

Gate has announced a significant expansion of its services across Africa through partnerships and localized payment channels. Working with Flutterwave, one of the continent’s leading fintech companies, Gate now enables users to purchase cryptocurrencies using local bank transfers and mobile payments in Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, and South Africa.

Dual-Sided Fiat Support for Major African Currencies

The collaboration provides seamless on-ramps for NGN (Nigerian Naira), XAF (Central African CFA Franc), KES (Kenyan Shilling), and ZAR (South African Rand). According to current exchange rates (as of April 10, 2026):

  • 1 USD ≈ 1,362 NGN
  • 1 USD ≈ 129.226 KES
  • 1 USD ≈ 16.409 ZAR
  • 1 USD ≈ 577.51 XAF

This expansion is powered by Gate Connect, the company’s secure fiat-to-crypto solution that supports over 110 currencies and integrates popular payment methods like debit/credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and more.

Addressing Africa’s Financial Infrastructure Challenges

Africa’s financial landscape has faced challenges including limited banking coverage, high remittance costs, and currency volatility. Gate’s partnership with Flutterwave aims to address these issues by providing a reliable, localized payment infrastructure that expands access to digital assets across the continent.

Flutterwave operates in 34 African countries, supports over 30 currencies, and has processed more than $16 billion in transactions for over 100,000 businesses. The company recently obtained key regulatory licenses in Egypt as part of its compliance strategy.

Localized Payment Channels by Country:

  • Nigeria: With high crypto adoption rates and a maturing regulatory environment (including recent virtual asset pilot projects), Nigeria represents a significant growth opportunity for Gate.
  • South Africa: As the most developed economy in Africa, South Africa offers a stable financial system with dedicated cryptocurrency regulations that support compliant digital asset growth.
  • Kenya: A leader in mobile payments across East Africa, Kenya’s regulatory framework is evolving with draft legislation for Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs).
  • Central African CFA Franc (XAF) Region: Covering six countries and a population of approximately 50 million, this region represents a key market for Gate’s localized payment solutions.

Gate’s expansion underscores the growing demand for accessible crypto on-ramps in Africa. With Flutterwave’s extensive network and Gate Connect’s global capabilities, users can now enter the digital asset space more affordably, securely, and conveniently than ever before.
