Google Provides Year-Long Free AI Tools to Nigerian Students

Google is offering students at accredited Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education 12 months of free access to its premium AI Plus plan. This initiative provides students with tools like Gemini Study Notebooks, Deep Research, interactive visualizations, and the Homework Helper feature—all valued at ₦92,400 ($68.56). The move aims to equip Nigeria’s young population with essential digital skills for global competitiveness.

Expanding Google’s AI Education Initiatives in Africa

This offer builds on Google’s previous commitments to expand AI access across the continent. Last year, Nigerian students received 12 months of free access to Google AI Pro, alongside similar programs in Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. In November, Google.org pledged $2.1 million to support AI skilling programs at higher institutions nationwide.

Impact on Student Learning

Google emphasizes that its Guided Learning approach helps students understand concepts rather than simply providing answers. A recent study with West African students showed those using Guided Learning made progress equivalent to 1.2-1.7 years of typical learning in just eight weeks.

“AI is a defining technological shift, and for Nigeria—with one of the world’s youngest populations—it represents an immediate leapfrog opportunity,” said Olumide Balogun, director at Google West & East Africa. “By removing financial barriers, we’re empowering students to master complex subjects and build in-demand skills.”

Eligible students can verify their enrollment through SheerID to claim the offer, which includes higher usage limits on Gemini, unlimited file uploads, and 400 GB of Google storage.
