Kenswitch and Visa Collaborate on Next-Generation Payments System

A strategic partnership between Kenswitch, a leading Kenyan payments infrastructure provider, and global technology giant Visa is set to reshape the country’s financial landscape. The framework agreement announced this week will combine Kenswitch’s established domestic network with Visa’s international expertise to create an enhanced payment ecosystem.

The collaboration comes as regulators push for a unified, real-time national payments switch that would connect banks, mobile wallets, and merchants across Kenya—handling billions of shillings daily. By integrating Visa’s global capabilities, Kenswitch aims to develop innovative solutions for financial institutions, fintech companies, and businesses while improving transaction processing efficiency.

“This partnership with Visa marks a significant milestone in our journey to modernize Kenya’s payment ecosystem,” said John Mukono, CEO of Kenswitch. “By leveraging Visa’s global innovation, we can co-create next-generation infrastructure that benefits all participants—from major banks and fintech startups to merchants and everyday Kenyans.”

Competitive Landscape

The deal arrives amid heightened competition for control over Kenya’s core payments rails, with banks, telecom operators, and international players vying for a stake in the evolving system. The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) is designing a fast payment system that would enable seamless money transfers across providers.

Nigeria’s national payments switch, NIBSS, has already signaled its interest through a partnership with Ceva to bid on building components of Kenya’s new infrastructure. Meanwhile, the banking sector is positioning Pesalink—operated by the Kenya Bankers Association—as a potential foundation for the real-time network.

Kenswitch, established in 2002 as part of Kenya’s payments modernization initiative, operates a vast network connecting thousands of ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, and agent banking outlets. The integration with Visa will expand its capabilities to include fraud prevention, data analytics, and digital acceptance tools.

The CBK has emphasized interoperability and domestic processing in its vision for the new system—seeking to balance innovation with control over critical financial infrastructure. Kenswitch’s partnership with Visa positions it as a strong contender in this evolving landscape.
