Kenyan Retailer Quickmart Goes Public Amidst Growing Investor Interest

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) is poised to receive a significant boost this week with two major deals: the public offering of shares in supermarket chain Quickmart, and the approval for global depositary receipts (GDRs) linked to Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Quickmart, backed by Adenia Partners and DEG, has opened its IPO selling 50% of its business at KES 7.50 per share, targeting a KES 15 billion ($116 million) raise. This would value the company at KES 30 billion ($232 million). The offer closes October 30, with trading expected to begin November 12.

Access to Nigeria’s Refinery Through GDR Structure

The Capital Markets Authority (CMA) has approved Renaissance Capital Kenya’s plan to offer GDRs tied to Dangote Petroleum Refinery. This framework allows Kenyan investors to access the Nigerian IPO without requiring full cross-listing on the NSE.

Strategic Significance of These Deals:

  • Quickmart: Provides another large, established Kenyan company for investors to own.
  • Dangote: Offers exposure to a major non-Kenyan asset through a structured product.
  • NSE Expansion: Demonstrates Kenya’s ability to facilitate access to African IPOs without full cross-listings, potentially attracting more regional companies in the future.
