Koolboks Brings Reliable Cooling to African Off-Grid Areas

Koolboks, a pan-African startup, is addressing energy poverty by deploying solar-powered refrigeration solutions to off-grid communities across Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda. Since 2021, the company has deployed over 10,000 units, providing essential cooling for businesses and healthcare facilities that lack reliable electricity.

The journey began in 2018 when founders Ayoola Dominic and Deborah Gael initially developed a portable solar cooler for the European leisure market. Recognizing a more pressing need based on Dominic’s experiences growing up in Nigeria, they pivoted to focus on refrigeration solutions for underserved communities.

“Our units operate entirely on solar energy with integrated lithium-ion batteries that provide 24/7 cooling even without direct sunlight,” explains Dominic. “The batteries also function as power hubs, allowing users to charge phones and power LED lighting.” This precise temperature control is particularly critical for preserving vaccines, fish, poultry, and other perishable goods.

Addressing Affordability Through Innovative Financing

To make these essential appliances accessible, Koolboks offers Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) financing. Customers pay a small upfront fee followed by weekly or monthly installments via mobile money—no collateral required. Each unit is IoT-enabled and remotely managed, allowing for seamless access to refrigeration services.

The company’s revenue model extends beyond hardware sales to include interest on PAYG financing and its Koolbuy platform, which offers Buy Now Pay Later options for other appliances from brands like Samsung and Panasonic.

Expanding Impact Through Sustainability Initiatives

Koolboks also operates Scrap4New, a program where customers can trade in old refrigerators for discounts—promoting both affordability and environmental responsibility. The startup refurbishes or recycles these units, creating additional revenue streams while minimizing waste.

With recent Series A funding of US$11 million (totaling approximately US$15.4 million), Koolboks is poised to expand its reach into new markets like Mozambique and Ghana—bringing reliable cooling solutions to more communities across Africa.
