Protecting Digital Lives in Lagos

The Lagos State Government is taking proactive steps to safeguard citizens’ data and digital transactions with the planned establishment of a Cybersecurity Operations Centre. This initiative addresses the growing need for digital protection as more residents engage with online platforms, digital payments, and technology-driven services.

Addressing Rising Digital Risks

Lagos, home to approximately 15 million people—a significant portion of whom are active internet users—faces increasing cybersecurity challenges. The state’s position as Nigeria’s economic hub means it’s a prime target for cyberattacks that could disrupt businesses, financial systems, and essential services.

“The network upgrade will improve efficiency, automate processes, enhance citizen engagement and support our vision of a smarter city environment,” stated Tunbosun Alake, Lagos State Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology.

Building a Robust Defense

The Cybersecurity Operations Centre will serve as a central hub for monitoring digital activity, detecting threats, and responding to incidents. The government is also strengthening its internal cybersecurity posture with:

  • A network of 109 Data Protection Officers across all MDAs (the highest number recorded by any state in Nigeria)
  • Implementation of tiered cybersecurity guidelines that include vulnerability assessments and security controls like multi-factor authentication
  • Alignment with national frameworks such as the Cybercrime Act, Nigeria Data Protection Act, and National Cybersecurity Policy

Expanding Digital Infrastructure

The initiative complements other government efforts to enhance Lagos’ digital ecosystem, including:

  • The Lagos Campus Network Upgrade to strengthen public sector IT infrastructure
  • Support for over 75 startups and 80 research projects with more than N900 million in funding
  • An expanded residents’ database of over 6.8 million records through the LASRRA agency

The establishment of this Cybersecurity Operations Centre underscores Lagos State’s commitment to digital innovation while prioritizing the safety and security of its citizens in an increasingly connected world.
