Independent research reveals Meta’s platforms are contributing an estimated $820 million to Nigeria’s annual GDP, with the potential to reach $2 billion as digital adoption deepens. The report by Public First found that 14 million Nigerian SMEs utilized Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other Meta apps to expand their businesses in 2023.

WhatsApp emerges as a key gateway to AI for Nigerians, handling 93% of all Meta AI prompts in Sub-Saharan Africa—demonstrating how people access new technologies through familiar tools. This aligns with the broader trend of AI adoption happening via platforms users already engage with daily.

“Nigeria is one of the most dynamic entrepreneurial markets globally,” said Balkissa Ide Siddo, Director of Public Policy at Meta. “Our platforms are removing traditional barriers to growth and unlocking real economic opportunities for businesses across various sectors.”

The research highlights additional benefits:

  • 81% of online businesses report expanded customer reach beyond local geography
  • 93% of users feel more connected to wider communities through these apps
  • Meta platforms serve as essential digital infrastructure, connecting entrepreneurs to markets and customers

Looking ahead, AI adoption could add $22 billion to Nigeria’s GDP by 2035 with strategic investments and policies—positioning the country as a leader in Africa’s digital economy. The report underscores how open-source AI solutions tailored for local needs can further accelerate this growth.
