NCC Committed to Bridging Digital Divide in Plateau State

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its dedication to expanding broadband access across underserved communities in Plateau State, emphasizing the state’s strategic importance in advancing Nigeria’s national digital agenda. During a recent visit by Executive Commissioner Rimini Makama to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, both parties expressed commitment to collaborative efforts that will bring transformative connectivity to rural areas.

The NCC highlighted Plateau State’s potential as a key partner due to its strong educational base, growing innovation ecosystem (particularly at nHub), youthful population, and supportive policy direction. Executive Commissioner Makama noted the state’s readiness for digital expansion, stating: “We have taken notice of Plateau’s commitment—from Right of Way policies to the TechFest declaration—which demonstrates the political will necessary for digital infrastructure development.”

Addressing Access Gaps

The NCC acknowledged that while Plateau State shows promise, many rural local government areas remain digitally underserved. This disparity limits access to education, economic opportunities, and essential services for communities across the state.

Both the NCC and Governor Mutfwang emphasized the need for practical implementation of digital initiatives:

  • Support for Right of Way policies to streamline infrastructure deployment
  • Leveraging the Universal Service Provision Fund to reach remote communities
  • Accelerating broadband rollout through partnerships like the existing MoU with Solitran

Seizing Digital Opportunities

Governor Mutfwang announced plans for a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) initiative creating at least 500 jobs for young people in Jos, capitalizing on the growing demand for remote talent. He also highlighted collaboration with UNDP to establish an innovation hub at Plateau State Polytechnic.

The NCC’s recognition of Plateau State reflects its commitment to supporting states that demonstrate digital potential and policy alignment—a critical foundation for sustainable digital development across Nigeria.
