Nigeria Invests in Future Workforce with Free Digital Skills Program

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a landmark partnership with Coursera to launch the Digital Training Academy (DTA), providing free access to world-class digital education for 36,000 young Nigerians. Education Minister Tunji Alausa unveiled this initiative at the Education World Forum 2026 in London, emphasizing its importance in building a digitally competent workforce.

The DTA will offer comprehensive training in high-demand technology fields including artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and software engineering. Upon completion, participants will earn globally recognized certifications that employers worldwide value. ## Addressing the Skills Gap

Nigeria faces a critical gap between its graduates’ skills and employer needs—both domestic and international. While global demand for AI, cybersecurity, and cloud professionals continues to surge, affordable access to quality training remains limited, especially outside major urban centers. By providing fully funded licenses on Coursera and Pluralsight, the government aims to remove this barrier. ## Nationwide Reach Through Strategic Partnerships

The DTA will leverage the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) to extend its reach across the country. These institutions will provide local support, mentorship programs, and ensure relevance to industry needs while participants access Coursera’s vast online library—the same materials used by learners in top global markets. ## Building a Future-Ready Generation

“Digital competency is no longer optional; it’s foundational,” Minister Alausa stated. “We’re building a generation of young Nigerians equipped to compete, lead, and thrive in the digital economy.” This initiative represents one of Nigeria’s largest investments in human capital development, signaling a commitment to positioning its workforce at the forefront of technological change.
