Building Nigeria’s Digital Foundation: New Partnership Aims for Tech Leadership

Nigeria has taken a significant step towards becoming a digital economy powerhouse through a strategic partnership between the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the International Data Centre Authority (IDCA). This collaboration will create a unified national program focused on developing AI infrastructure, establishing regulatory standards, and training local talent.

The centerpiece of this initiative is the Nigeria Digital Triangle—a network of large-scale, AI-powered data centres designed to support cloud computing, attract investment, and form the backbone of the country’s digital economy. According to NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, this represents a ‘defining moment for Nigeria’s economic transformation’.

The program comprises several key components:

  • A comprehensive plan for Nigeria’s digital economy with clear objectives
  • Integrated, large-scale digital infrastructure hubs
  • Digital standards aligned with global best practices
  • A robust workforce development system

Mehdi Paryavi, Chairman of IDCA, emphasized the long-term economic value creation potential of this partnership. By aligning infrastructure, talent, and policy frameworks, Nigeria is building a sustainable competitive advantage in the digital realm.

The initiative will take three years to deliver and involve collaboration across government agencies, businesses, and international organizations. NITDA projects that revenue will be generated from both public and private sources, positioning the Digital Triangle as an attractive destination for global cloud companies seeking to expand their presence in Africa.
