Nigeria Eyes In-Country Satellite Equipment Production

Nigeria is taking a significant step toward greater self-sufficiency in its space program by planning to manufacture some ground equipment for its next generation of communications satellites. This initiative aims to move beyond simply owning and operating satellites towards building domestic capabilities across the entire connectivity value chain.

The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) has partnered with US-based Hughes Network Systems to establish a local assembly facility that will produce satellite terminals—including antennas and related equipment—for NIGCOMSAT-2A and 2B, slated for launch in 2028 and 2029. This represents a potential shift in Nigeria’s approach to space infrastructure.

Building Local Expertise

The move could create several benefits: developing local expertise in satellite hardware, establishing a service base for the wider African region, and reducing reliance on imported equipment. However, success will depend on whether this initiative evolves into a sustainable industry or remains tied to government-backed programs.

While Thales Alenia Space and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) will build the satellites themselves, NIGCOMSAT aims to have the ground systems and local manufacturing capabilities ready before launch. This holistic approach—developing both space assets and supporting infrastructure simultaneously—is relatively uncommon in satellite deployments.

Past Lessons Inform New Strategy

Nigeria’s previous experience with satellite programs offers valuable context. When NigComSat-1 launched in 2007, it established ground stations in Abuja and Kashgar, China. However, a solar-array failure shortly after launch left much of this infrastructure underutilized until its replacement, NigComSat-1R, was deployed in 2011.

The current initiative reflects lessons learned from these earlier experiences—particularly the importance of ensuring that ground infrastructure has clear commercial applications beyond supporting a single satellite. The Hughes partnership could help address this by creating a more versatile platform with broader service offerings.

“Being contracted for this strategic national program validates our JUPITER platform’s strength and flexibility,” said Anshu Vij, Managing Director of Hughes EMEA. “This collaboration will enable NIGCOMSAT to deliver resilient connectivity while building a foundation for future growth across Nigeria.” The system will support multiple frequency bands (Ka-, Ku- and C-bands) allowing for diverse applications from broadband to enterprise services.

The proposed manufacturing facility could also extend beyond NIGCOMSAT’s direct needs, potentially serving as a hub for servicing other satellite operators in the region—provided it develops true manufacturing capabilities rather than limited assembly operations.
