Early-Stage Fund Bets on Operational Intelligence for African SMEs

Cape Town-based startup Tennsa has secured its first major investment from Oakvale Invest, marking the fund’s entry into the African AI market. The pre-seed round of over ZAR1 million (approximately $61,000) will fuel development of Tennsa OS, an operational intelligence platform designed to help small and medium businesses make better decisions with their data.

Addressing a Common Pain Point for Growing Businesses

Tennsa OS connects to existing business software – accounting systems, CRMs, sales tools – pulling information into a central dashboard. The platform then identifies critical issues, highlights trends, and provides actionable insights without requiring manual data analysis. Founder Rivar Maharaj explains that the company’s approach stems from recognizing how administrative tasks often consume entrepreneurs’ time.

“We’re building AI for the operational backbone of businesses,” says Maharaj. “Instead of spending hours tracking activity across multiple tools, we want to give business owners more time to focus on strategic initiatives.” This resonates particularly well in African markets where SMEs frequently operate with limited staff and a patchwork of software solutions.

Why Investors Are Taking Notice

Herman Ekdahl of Oakvale Invest highlighted Tennsa’s combination of local expertise, market relevance, and practical application as key factors in the decision. “We seek companies that solve real problems for African businesses with sustainable technology solutions,” explains Ekdahl.

The investment signals a growing interest in AI applications beyond consumer-facing products and fintech – specifically targeting the operational needs of established SMEs. While many businesses generate ample data, their ability to extract meaningful insights often lags due to resource constraints.
