OpenAI Prioritizes African Inclusion in AI Development

At this week’s Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, Emmanuel Lubanzadio, OpenAI’s regional lead, announced a significant strategic shift: the company will now prioritize structural empowerment across the continent rather than solely focusing on market expansion.

Lubanzadio emphasized that OpenAI’s mission—to ensure AI benefits all of humanity—cannot be fulfilled without meaningful African inclusion. The company currently serves over 900 million weekly active users globally, with a substantial proportion coming from Africa who utilize its free intelligence tier.

Addressing the Digital Divide

OpenAI is pursuing a three-pronged approach to bridge the gap between access and utility:

  1. Commercial Access: The company launched ChatGPT-Go, an affordable version of its flagship generative model tailored for price-sensitive emerging markets
  2. Digital Literacy: Through the newly established OpenAI Academy (currently piloted in Nigeria), users can acquire the technical skills to effectively deploy AI tools
  3. Developer Support: The Codex Ambassador program actively recruits and embeds local talent within African developer communities

Lubanzadio noted that while access is essential, “literacy is quite important—access without knowledge of how to utilize technology isn’t sufficient.” He confirmed plans to expand the Academy across additional markets.

Building Local Solutions

Beyond consumer literacy, OpenAI is actively courting technical talent through its Codex Ambassador program. The company has already appointed two ambassadors in Nairobi, Kenya, with an inaugural meet-up attracting over 300 registrations.

The ultimate goal, according to Lubanzadio, is enabling African users to become creators of context-specific solutions rather than mere consumers—empowering them to build software and address local challenges in sectors like healthcare.

“We’re providing the technology,” Lubanzadio concluded, “but people actually do the magic.” This community-first approach signals OpenAI’s commitment to Africa not just as a market but as an active hub for AI innovation.
