Paga Enters Payment Infrastructure Market

Paga Group, a leading Nigerian fintech company, is expanding its business model beyond consumer-facing payment services. Through its new payments infrastructure offering, Paga Engine, the company aims to provide businesses with ready-made financial technology solutions instead of requiring them to build their own systems from scratch.

The shift reflects a broader trend in the fintech sector where companies are finding that selling underlying infrastructure can generate more stable revenue streams than relying on direct consumer transactions. This model is particularly attractive in rapidly growing digital payments markets like Nigeria, which saw ₦1.07 quadrillion ($774.9 billion) in transaction volume in 2024 alone.

Paga Engine offers a suite of services including payment gateways, wallet infrastructure, transfers, and embedded payment experiences—allowing businesses to accept payments, manage customer wallets, and disburse funds without the complexity of building and maintaining their own payment systems.

Why Payment Infrastructure?

The economics of operating payment rails are challenging. Companies face significant costs for licensing, compliance, fraud monitoring, security architecture, and ongoing maintenance. For businesses whose core focus is outside financial services—such as logistics, e-commerce, or retail—building this infrastructure in-house can be expensive.

“That money can be better invested in the businesses’ core services,” says Ramon Bello, general manager of Paga Engine. Companies using Paga Engine avoid these upfront and ongoing costs while gaining access to a robust payment platform with built-in security and compliance features.

Competitive Landscape

Paga is entering a market that includes established players like Flutterwave, Paystack, and Onafriq—all of which offer API-driven payment solutions. However, Paga differentiates itself through its operational support layer, providing businesses with enhanced monitoring tools, fraud prevention capabilities, and dedicated enterprise assistance.

Currently supporting over 200 businesses including Meta and Amazon, Paga Engine processed roughly $12 billion in transaction value in 2025—generating potential revenue of $12-$36 million from infrastructure services alone.
