Digital Nomad Lifestyle for Tech Professional
A chemical engineering graduate from Nigeria is leveraging remote work opportunities to maintain a truly global lifestyle. Olayinka Oke, who works in data management and governance at Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), spends roughly $368 per month on travel while living in different countries throughout the year.
From Local Exploration to International Travel
Oke’s journey began with weekend trips across Nigeria during public holidays. She would extend her time off by a few days to explore various states, from Ekiti in the southwest to Kano in the north. These experiences sparked a curiosity that eventually led her beyond national borders.
Her first international trip was to Accra, Ghana, in 2017. This experience opened her eyes to new possibilities and fueled her desire to see more of the world.
The Logistics of Frequent Travel
Today, Oke meticulously plans trips that allow her to spend roughly one month at a time in different locations. She saves over $368 monthly into a dedicated travel fund to finance this lifestyle.
Recent destinations have included high-brow areas of Nairobi, Kenya, and coastal towns like Lamu. Upcoming plans include visits to multiple European countries and potentially Thailand later this year.
Balancing Remote Work with Global Exploration
While her job at NLNG remains based in Nigeria, Oke has structured her career to accommodate frequent travel. She finds fulfillment in experiencing new cultures while maintaining a stable income through remote work.
“There’s always that point of wanting to be in a saner clime,” she explains. “Every time you encounter avoidable issues in Nigeria, you tell yourself this wouldn’t happen if you lived elsewhere.”
What began as weekend explorations has evolved into a full-fledged digital nomad lifestyle for this Nigerian tech professional.
