SAP Strengthens Data Capabilities with Reltio Acquisition
In a move aimed at accelerating its AI-first strategy, SAP has announced the acquisition of Reltio, a leading master data management (MDM) software provider. This acquisition will bolster SAP’s Business Data Cloud (BDC) and enable customers to create an enterprise data foundation that supports AI applications like Joule and Joule agents.
The deal allows SAP to expand beyond its traditional ERP focus by harmonizing, cleansing, and governing both SAP and non-SAP data sources. According to Muhammad Alam, member of SAP’s Executive Board, this addresses customer demand for a more comprehensive MDM solution within the BDC ecosystem.
Key benefits of the acquisition:
- Unified Data View: Reltio’s capabilities will provide a single source of truth for critical business entities like customers, suppliers, and products across all systems.
- AI Readiness: Cleaned and harmonized data feeds reliable inputs for AI models, improving accuracy and insights.
- Cross-Application Governance: Consistent data policies enforced across the entire SAP suite and integrated third-party applications.
- Expanded Interoperability: Enables data exchange beyond traditional SAP boundaries, supporting modern composable architectures.
Industry analysts note this acquisition aligns with SAP’s broader strategy to evolve from a system of record to a system of context—providing the reliable data foundation needed for intelligent enterprise workflows. However, some question whether Reltio represents true best-in-class MDM given that SAP reportedly considered Celonis before settling on Reltio.
The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval and standard closing conditions; financial terms were not disclosed.
