Senegal Unveils $50 Million Startup Fund
At the AfricaTech stage of VivaTech in Paris, Aida Mbodji, General Delegate of the Delegation for Rapid Entrepreneurship of Women and Youth (DER/FJ) of Senegal, announced the creation of Catalyst DER/FJ. This new fund will provide equity financing to innovative Senegalese startups at the pre-seed and seed stages.
The announcement highlighted Senegal’s growing startup ecosystem, showcasing 15 companies across sectors like fintech, healthtech, cybersecurity, and engineering. Several founders presented their ventures directly to investors following the launch.
Addressing a Critical Funding Gap
Data shows that seed-stage funding represents only 1.5% of total investment in Africa—significantly lower than the 4%-6% typically seen in markets like the United States. This early-stage deficit often forces founders to exhaust their runway while still validating business models and building teams.
Catalyst DER/FJ aims to bridge this gap by using public capital to attract private investors, creating leverage, and strengthening the local startup ecosystem’s competitiveness.
Strategic Partnerships & Ecosystem Building
The fund has already established a partnership with Wave Senegal to implement a local startup acceleration program that decentralizes digital innovation support across the country. This approach reflects a broader strategy to build sector-specific champions rather than supporting scattered accelerators competing for limited talent.
Looking ahead, Catalyst DER/FJ represents a significant step in institutionalizing early-stage venture capital in Francophone Africa and empowering Senegal’s next generation of tech leaders.
