Securing the Future of Work: Snowflake Acquires Natoma for Agent Governance

In a move signaling the growing importance of governance in enterprise AI, Snowflake announced its acquisition of Natoma, a startup specializing in Model Context Protocol (MCP) connectivity and security. This acquisition positions Snowflake as a key player in managing increasingly autonomous AI agents that interact with sensitive business data and systems.

The need for robust agent governance stems from how MCP works: it standardizes connections between AI tools and enterprise applications but doesn’t inherently provide security or access controls. As Phil Fersht, CEO of HFS Research, noted, “Without identity, policy, and auditability, MCP can quickly become a shadow AI risk.”

Natoma’s platform will be integrated into Snowflake to offer:

  • Secure connections between Cortex Agents, Snowflake Intelligence, and other AI platforms
  • Centralized governance with identity controls and access policies
  • Audit trails for all agent interactions
  • A control plane that extends across cloud environments, SaaS applications, and on-premises infrastructure

Why This Matters for CIOs

The acquisition addresses a critical gap as organizations move beyond AI pilot projects. Robert Kramer, managing partner at KramerERP, explained that while MCP standardizes connections, it’s the governance layer that ensures responsible use of these capabilities.

As AI agents gain access to more systems and data, CIOs must now govern:

  • What data agents can see
  • Which systems they can interact with
  • The actions they are authorized to trigger
  • How all activity is logged and audited

Challenges Ahead

While the acquisition could strengthen Snowflake’s position in the competitive AI platform landscape, analysts caution that most enterprises aren’t yet ready for widespread agent adoption. Organizations need to update their identity management, access controls, and data governance frameworks to support this new paradigm.

As Michael Ni, principal analyst at Constellation Research, observed, “The bigger test will be how seamlessly Snowflake can integrate Natoma’s capabilities and whether CIOs can manage agent permissions at scale without adding complexity.”

With the acquisition, Snowflake joins a growing number of technology vendors vying to become the trusted platform for managing enterprise AI agents.
