Standard Bank Pursues OPay Investment Before Planned IPO

Africa’s largest bank by assets, Standard Bank Group, is reportedly in discussions to acquire a stake in Nigerian fintech giant OPay before its anticipated listing on a U.S. stock exchange. This move would position the South African banking leader as an early investor in what could be one of the continent’s most significant technology IPOs.

The talks come as OPay, backed by major investors like SoftBank and Sequoia Capital, prepares for a New York listing with a target valuation of approximately $4 billion – double its $2 billion valuation from 2021. The company has been collaborating with investment banks including Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, and JPMorgan Chase to finalize plans for the public offering.

Strategic Significance

Standard Bank’s interest is particularly noteworthy as pre-IPO stakes in high-growth technology companies typically trade at a discount compared to listing prices. For a bank of Standard Bank’s scale, acquiring OPay would provide direct exposure to Nigeria’s leading digital payment platform while offering financial returns.

OPay has built one of the country’s largest agent banking networks since launching in 2018, serving millions of users with mobile money, bill payments, and merchant services – particularly in underserved areas where traditional bank branches are limited. Its hybrid approach combining a digital app with extensive offline access points has made it a primary financial touchpoint for a significant portion of Nigeria’s population.

Implications for African Fintech

A successful OPay IPO would mark another milestone for African technology companies seeking capital on international markets, potentially attracting greater institutional investment to the sector. The company’s progression from earlier funding rounds to a $4 billion valuation demonstrates considerable growth potential.

The Central Bank of Nigeria recently granted OPay a full national license allowing it to operate as a payment service bank – further strengthening its position in the financial services landscape.
