Starlink and Airtel Bring Satellite Connectivity to Underserved Communities in Uganda

In a landmark partnership, Starlink and Airtel Africa have launched their satellite-to-mobile service in Uganda, marking the second African country to gain access to this transformative technology. The announcement follows earlier entry into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where it became the first African nation to welcome Starlink mobile.

The service promises to connect millions of Ugandans in rural and remote areas with apps and messaging capabilities previously unavailable due to limited cellular coverage. Compatible smartphones will now be able to directly access Starlink’s satellite network without relying on traditional cell towers.

Addressing a Critical Infrastructure Gap

This launch addresses a significant challenge for African telecom operators, who often struggle to extend infrastructure to remote communities due to high costs and logistical hurdles. With direct-to-cell technology, connectivity can reach areas previously considered uneconomical to serve.

Expanding Across the Continent

Other major players are also entering this space: MTN Zambia recently completed successful field testing of Starlink’s services, while AXIAN Telecom partnered with AST SpaceMobile for similar direct-to-device broadband. Airtel is nearing launch in Kenya after successful pilot tests earlier this year.

Transformative Potential for Uganda

The arrival of satellite connectivity has the potential to transform various sectors:

  • Healthcare: Remote consultations and access to medical information
  • Education: Online learning resources and digital literacy programs
  • Economic empowerment: Access to markets, financial services, and entrepreneurship opportunities

During a 30-day introductory period, customers with compatible smartphones can experience the service through a free trial accessible via the MyAirtel App.

Soumendra Sahu, Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, hailed the partnership as “transforming how connectivity is delivered across our country,” adding that it complements existing investments and extends coverage to areas previously unreachable.

The launch follows Starlink’s recent regulatory approval in Uganda, allowing for unobstructed operation and hardware sales. With this milestone, Uganda joins a select group of nations pioneering direct satellite-to-mobile communication on the continent.
