Bridging the Digital Divide: TechAble Empowering Young People With Disabilities in Nigeria

In a significant step towards digital inclusion, Nigeria’s TechAble initiative is providing young people with disabilities access to technology and STEM education. Launched in 2024 by the Deafzion Foundation, TechAble addresses the critical gap in disability-inclusive tech training that exists across Africa.

Addressing Digital Exclusion

TechAble offers bootcamps, workshops, and community programs focused on digital literacy, data science fundamentals, AI applications, problem-solving, leadership development, and career readiness. The initiative distinguishes itself by incorporating accessibility features, inclusive teaching methods, assistive technologies, and psychosocial support into its curriculum.

“We identified a major gap in disability-inclusive tech education,” explains Emmanuel Izuchukwu Osita, TechAble lead and executive director of the Deafzion Foundation. “While many digital skills programs exist, few intentionally accommodate learners with disabilities or operate within truly inclusive environments.”

Early Successes & Expansion Plans

To date, TechAble has trained over 40 Nigerian youths in digital and AI skills, securing partnerships with organizations like LEAP Africa, Dow, and state disability agencies. The initiative currently operates in Nasarawa State, Abuja, and Plateau State, with plans to expand nationwide and into select African countries.

Demand for the program has been exceptionally strong, with high participation rates and positive retention among students—particularly girls with disabilities. TechAble is funded through grants, donations, and partnerships, addressing a clear need within underserved communities.

Challenges & Future Vision

While community support and demand have enabled early success, challenges remain in securing funding, managing accessibility costs, navigating infrastructure limitations, and raising awareness about disability-inclusive tech education. Despite these hurdles, TechAble is poised to scale its impact across Nigeria and beyond.
