Terra Industries Closes $52 Million Seed Round, Redefining Defence Technology for Africa
Nigerian startup Terra Industries has secured a remarkable $52 million in seed funding – the most ever raised by an African defence technology company. This latest tranche of $18 million brings total funding to date to $52 million, with participation from notable investors including 8VC, Silent Ventures, Nova Global, Belief Capital, SV Angel, Norleo Space Investments, and angel investor Grant Gordon.
A New Approach to Defence Technology
Founded in 2024 by Nathan Nwachuku (then 22) and Maxwell Maduka (then 24), Terra Industries designs and manufactures autonomous defence systems, drones, interceptors, sentry towers, and unmanned ground vehicles. All these capabilities are integrated through ArtemisOS, their proprietary software platform for real-time threat detection and coordinated response.
This approach addresses a critical gap in the African security landscape: most governments currently import defence technology from suppliers who built systems for different environments. Terra’s founders envisioned an alternative – building solutions tailored to Africa’s unique challenges with local expertise.
Already Protecting Critical Assets
Terra’s technology is already deployed across multiple African countries, safeguarding power plants, mines, and other critical infrastructure valued at approximately $11 billion. The company currently holds $100 million in active contracts – demonstrating clear market validation for their solutions.
Strategic Expansion with Global Reach
The London office marks a significant milestone beyond mere expansion; it provides direct access to global defence institutions, talent pools, and operational expertise while maintaining manufacturing on the continent. As Nathan Nwachuku stated, “This funding allows us to scale our operations, deepen our manufacturing base, and compete for contracts at the global level.” Terra’s deliberate strategy keeps production in Africa while positioning itself as a premier supplier worldwide.
Building Manufacturing Capacity on the Continent
The company’s Pax-2 manufacturing facility in Ghana (opening Q4 2026) will be the largest drone factory in Africa, with a targeted annual capacity of 50,000 units by 2028. This positions Terra to supply African governments at scale and potentially expand into markets across the Gulf, South America, and beyond.
Addressing Emerging Security Threats
The security context underscores the need for Terra’s solutions: Al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates have escalated drone warfare in the Sahel region, outpacing most African militaries’ counter-drone capabilities. This has created both a challenge and an opportunity for indigenous defence technology companies like Terra.
Investment Confidence from Silicon Valley and Africa
The investor lineup reflects broad confidence in Terra’s vision: 8VC (co-founded by Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale) led the initial round, with Alex Moore (defence investor at 8VC and non-executive director at Palantir) joining Terra’s board. Additional support comes from Lux Capital and Resilience17 Capital (the fund of Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola).
Terra Industries represents a new paradigm for defence technology – one where African innovation addresses local challenges with scalable, sovereign solutions.
