Vodacom Strengthens Leadership with Experienced Telecom Executive
Vodacom has announced the appointment of Segun Ogunsanya, former CEO of Airtel Africa, as an independent non-executive director. This strategic move comes as Vodacom prepares to accelerate its Vision 2030 strategy and expand beyond traditional connectivity services.
Ogunsanya brings over three decades of leadership experience across finance, banking, telecommunications, and corporate governance. Prior to his tenure at Airtel Africa, where he led operations in 14 countries until July 2024, he held senior positions at Coca-Cola and Ecobank Transnational.
The appointment signals Vodacom’s ambition to evolve into a broader technology company offering financial services and digital solutions alongside its core mobile network business. International markets, Safaricom, and financial services already represent significant growth areas for the group.
Board Reshuffle Underway
Ogunsanya’s arrival coincides with a wider board restructuring at Vodacom:
- Saki Macozoma will retire as chairman in July 2027 after reaching the company’s 10-year tenure limit\n* Khumo Shuenyane, current lead independent director, will succeed Macozoma as chair\n* Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, CEO of Naspers, will retire from the board in October 2026\n Vodacom credited Macozoma with guiding the implementation of Vision 2025 and launching Vision 2030, while highlighting Ogunsanya’s deep understanding of African telecoms markets as essential to their continued growth.
