A Financial Powerhouse Emerges from Telecom Roots
VodaCom’s latest trading update reveals a significant transformation underway in the African telecommunications landscape. The company processed $547.9 billion in mobile money transactions over the past 12 months, surpassing the GDP of many African nations.
Beyond Connectivity: A Digital Payments Giant
The rise of M-Pesa has fundamentally reshaped Vodacom’s business model. While traditionally known for voice and data services, digital payments now rival these as revenue drivers. This shift extends across multiple markets where Vodacom operates, including Tanzania, Mozambique, Lesotho, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Egypt.
CEO Shameel Joosub noted that this transaction value highlights how mobile financial services are reaching previously underserved populations: “It moves through mobile phones, not bank branches, reaching people who have never had a formal bank account and may never need one if their phone can do everything a bank does.”
Diversification Drives Growth
VodaCom’s success in digital payments complements growth in data revenue. As smartphone adoption rises across markets like Nigeria, Tanzania, and South Africa, demand for mobile data continues to increase. The company is also expanding its enterprise business, offering connectivity, cloud solutions, and digital tools to businesses—a more stable revenue stream than consumer services.
The consolidation of Safaricom, which added Kenya’s mature M-Pesa ecosystem, has accelerated this transformation by providing deeper market insights and operational synergies.
