Bridging the Skills Gap: WorkKE Marketplace Empowers African Businesses

WorkKE, a Kenyan startup founded in 2025 by Kennedy Mokaya Asiago, is transforming how businesses find and hire skilled professionals. The online marketplace connects employers with freelancers, consultants, and project-based talent across various industries.

Addressing Key Market Needs

Asiago identified three major challenges that WorkKE addresses: limited access to trusted digital work opportunities for African professionals, the high cost and inefficiency of traditional recruitment methods for SMEs, and the lack of platforms tailored specifically to the African market’s unique needs.

“We combine secure escrow payments, local payment options, employer-focused tools, training programs through WorkKE Academy, and an ecosystem built entirely for Africa,” explains Asiago. This comprehensive approach differentiates WorkKE from international competitors like Upwork and Fiverr that may not fully cater to the African context.

Rapid Growth Through Organic Demand

The platform has achieved significant traction since its launch, signing up over 7,000 users with around 4,000 active monthly participants. More than KES5 million (US$40,000) in freelancer payouts have been facilitated through WorkKE.

“We’ve seen particularly strong demand in software development, graphic design, digital marketing, writing, and virtual assistance,” notes Asiago. The high rate of repeat hiring demonstrates growing trust in the platform’s ability to deliver quality talent.

Expanding Across East Africa

While Kenya remains WorkKE’s primary market, the startup is gradually expanding its regional footprint to include Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, and South Africa. Its long-term vision is to become one of Africa’s leading digital work platforms by enabling secure cross-border hiring and increasing access to remote opportunities.

WorkKE generates revenue through multiple channels including service fees on completed projects, premium employer subscriptions, freelancer verification services, training programs via WorkKE Academy, and sales of AI-powered business tools.
