A Decade of African Startup Returns: Winners and Missed Opportunities

A new analysis by TechCabal Insights reveals a stark contrast in outcomes for startups founded across Africa in 2016.

While the cohort raised $1.89 billion over ten years—with Flutterwave alone accounting for $475 million—liquidity remains limited. The top 34 companies captured 89% of this funding, while more than 20 received nothing at all.

The mid-2010s represented a prime moment for African startups, with rising mobile money adoption, falling smartphone prices, and increased global interest in the continent’s tech potential. Companies across Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Uganda, and Ghana were founded—spanning fintech, agritech, e-commerce, cleantech, and health sectors.

Key Findings

  • Concentrated Returns: The top 34 companies received 89% of all funding ($1.68 billion)
  • Median Performance: Companies with consistent performance raised around $1 million over ten years
  • Winner-Take-All Dynamic: Flutterwave secured more than twice the total funding of its entire cohort (excluding itself)
  • Limited Exits: Despite significant capital inflow, actual returns through startup exits remain low

The data underscores both opportunities and challenges in Africa’s venture ecosystem—highlighting the need for improved exit strategies alongside continued investment
