African Tech Secures Significant Mid-Year Funding Boost

African startups demonstrated resilience and growth potential in the first half of 2026, raising a total of $1.4 billion—matching last year’s performance despite economic headwinds. The strong showing was particularly evident in June, which saw an impressive $515 million raised across 48 companies.

Key Highlights from H1 2026 Funding:

  • Total funding: $1.4 billion (same as H1 2025)
  • Equity financing accounted for 66% ($900 million), exceeding expectations given the recent prevalence of debt
  • Debt financing rose to 33% ($450 million), a 12.5% increase year-over-year
  • June was the strongest month with $515 million raised—a 281.4% monthly growth and nearly 90% higher than February’s previous high

June Funding Surge Led by Major Deals:

The exceptional performance in June was fueled by several significant investments, including:

  • Spiro (Benin): $270 million from NewTrails Capital, Impact Fund Denmark, Equitane, FEDA, Nithio, and the Africa Go Green Fund—pushing its total funding past $600 million
  • Flutterwave (Nigeria): $100 million investment from Ripple as part of a Series E round valuing the company at $3.2 billion—integrating Ripple’s blockchain technology into Flutterwave’s payment infrastructure
  • MNT-Halan (Egypt): $50 million led by Al Ahly Capital, achieving a $1.4 billion valuation and enabling expansion across Egypt and beyond

This robust funding activity underscores the continued interest in African tech despite global economic uncertainties, with equity financing maintaining its dominance while debt options also show growth.
