Airtel Money Drives Financial Inclusion with Record Q2 Performance

Airtel Africa’s mobile money service, Airtel Money, has demonstrated remarkable growth processing transactions worth $61.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026—a 51.5% increase year-over-year. This milestone arrives as preparations accelerate for a planned initial public offering (IPO) expected later this year.

The transaction volume underscores the continued adoption of digital payment solutions across Africa, driven by demand for faster and more convenient financial services. Revenue from Airtel Money reached $404 million, up 38.9% compared to the previous year, with wallet services contributing $196 million, payments & transfers generating $172 million, and other offerings accounting for the remainder.

Strategic Investments Fuel Growth

Airtel Money’s expansion is supported by ongoing investments in infrastructure and distribution networks. During Q2 2026, capital expenditure (CAPEX) on Airtel Money totaled $15 million—demonstrating a commitment to meet growing demand and enhance service capabilities.

The platform now serves 56.5 million customers across 14 African markets including Nigeria, East Africa, and Francophone regions—representing a 23.3% year-over-year increase in its user base. Average revenue per user also improved from $2.1 to $2.4 during the period.

Market Performance Breakdown:

  • Nigeria: While Airtel Money’s revenue increased by 153.2% year-over-year to $5 million, its market share remains below potential given Nigeria’s large customer base (currently 3.4 million users)
  • East Africa: The region generated $297 million in revenue with 41.7 million customers across Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia
  • Francophone Africa: Revenue reached $102 million supported by a customer base of 11.4 million users across countries like Chad, DRC, Gabon, and Madagascar

IPO on Track for Second Half of 2026

The strong performance positions Airtel Money favorably for its upcoming IPO, which is now expected to value the service at approximately $10 billion—attracting interest from both institutional and retail investors.

Airtel Africa has identified London as its preferred listing venue, citing access to a broad international investor base that aligns with the company’s long-term growth strategy. The IPO represents an opportunity for investors to participate in one of Africa’s leading fintech platforms.
