Alipay+ Onboards Hang Seng Bank, Expanding Cross-Border Payment Access

Ant International’s unified wallet gateway, Alipay+, has added Hang Seng Bank as its first banking partner in Hong Kong. This strategic move extends the network’s reach to Hang Seng Mobile App users, enabling them to scan QR codes at over 100 million merchants across 55+ countries and regions—including Mainland China.

The partnership aligns with Alipay+‘s broader expansion strategy that already includes major banks in Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The network currently spans more than 50 digital wallets and financial institutions, accepted in over 220 markets globally.

Strategic Advantages for Banks

The appeal of Alipay+ to incumbent and digital banks centers on its distribution capabilities: a single integration grants access to a vast QR merchant footprint across multiple markets—eliminating the need for individual negotiations. Moreover, Alipay+ connects to ten national QR infrastructure systems like Malaysia’s DuitNow, Thailand’s PromptPay, and Uzbekistan’s HUMO, further broadening coverage without added complexity.

Beyond payments, the Alipay+ Super App Platform allows banks to embed third-party services—such as travel bookings and social features—directly into their apps. Ant International positions this as a customer retention tool amid increasing pressure on engagement metrics in uncertain economic times.

Additional Platform Capabilities

Ant International highlighted two additional offerings for banking clients:

  • Falcon TST AI FX model: Capable of up to 93% accurate long-term foreign exchange forecasting, already used by Citi and Barclays
  • Whale: An AI-powered blockchain platform for near-instant cross-border liquidity transfer, integrated by Standard Chartered and HSBC
