Arc Ride Raises $33.3 Million to Scale Electric Mobility Network

Kenyan electric mobility startup Arc Ride has announced a significant funding round of $33.3 million, co-led by Novastar Ventures and Norrsken22. This investment will accelerate the company’s expansion of its battery-swapping network across sub-Saharan Africa, addressing one of the key barriers to electric vehicle adoption in the region.

The financing combines equity and debt components, with participation from International Finance Corporation (IFC), British International Investment (BII), Proparco (French development finance institution), alongside existing investors Musashi Seimitsu and Talanton. The capital will be used to expand Arc Ride’s fleet of electric motorcycles, build out battery infrastructure, and enter new markets including South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Addressing Key Challenges in Electric Mobility

Arc Ride operates a unique battery-as-a-service model that allows riders to lease motorcycles without purchasing the expensive batteries. Instead, they can exchange depleted batteries for charged ones at Arc Ride stations – a solution that significantly reduces upfront costs and addresses range anxiety.

The company’s network is designed to support vehicles from multiple manufacturers, offering greater flexibility for riders and reducing vendor lock-in. This open approach positions Arc Ride as an essential infrastructure provider in the evolving electric motorcycle market.

Strategic Expansion Across Key Markets

With this new funding, Arc Ride plans to add approximately 5,000 more electric motorcycles to its fleet while investing in battery lifecycle management and automated swapping technology. The company has already launched pilot programs in South Africa’s Cape Town and Gauteng regions.

While Kenya serves as the company’s established market, expansion into countries with different transport patterns and regulatory environments will test Arc Ride’s adaptability. For example, South Africa’s more developed automotive industry presents unique challenges compared to Kenya’s reliance on motorcycle taxis for urban mobility.

Building a Sustainable Mobility Ecosystem

Arc Ride’s vision extends beyond simply providing electric motorcycles; the company aims to create a complete ecosystem that supports widespread adoption of electric two- and three-wheelers. By focusing on infrastructure solutions, Arc Ride can potentially serve multiple manufacturers and riders across various markets.

The $33.3 million investment underscores growing confidence in Africa’s electric mobility potential and highlights the importance of innovative business models like battery-as-a-service in driving sustainable transportation solutions across the continent.
