Bekia Raises $765,000 to Scale Digital Waste Collection Platform
Egyptian startup Bekia has secured a US$765,000 seed round led by Madica, an Africa-focused investment program affiliated with Flourish Ventures. The funding will support the company’s expansion of its consumer app and launch of a new B2B software product.
Building a Digital Recycling Economy
Founded in 2019, Bekia is building a digital platform to formalize Egypt’s informal waste collection sector. Its initial offering—a consumer app allowing households to book pickups and receive instant payments for recycled materials—has already connected thousands of collectors with consumers.
Launching Carbon Credit Verification Services
The new funding will enable Bekia to launch “Bekia Next,” a B2B service that generates verified carbon offset certificates from waste collection data. Using established international accounting methodologies, Bekia Next provides businesses with traceable proof of their environmental impact reductions—a first for the Egyptian market.
Transforming Waste into Value
“Egypt’s recycling sector has always worked informally on trust and cash,” explains Alaa Afifi, Bekia’s founder and CEO. “We built the software layer that brings transparency: collectors get transaction histories, factories receive traceable supply chains, and households understand what their waste is worth.” The company emphasizes that while the materials themselves have commodity value, the data surrounding them—provenance, impact—represents a new asset class.
Backing from Leading Investors
The round also includes investments from Catalyst Fund and Dakar-based Jambaar Capital. Emmanuel Adegboye of Madica noted Bekia’s unique understanding of the local market: “They’re drawing on firsthand experience to build an interconnected ecosystem serving households, small businesses, and industrial waste producers.”
Bekia plans to use this funding to expand its engineering team, launch Bekia Next, and explore new markets across Africa.
