CreditChek Broadens Financial Reach with Acquisition of Uganda’s Algosys

Nigerian fintech innovator CreditChek has acquired Ugandan startup Algosys in a strategic move to deepen its presence in East Africa and build comprehensive lending solutions for the region. The acquisition marks CreditChek’s entry into Uganda and aligns with its ambition to become a full-fledged lending infrastructure provider.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Algosys will operate as a subsidiary of CreditChek, with its team integrated into the Nigerian firm. This follows CreditChek’s recent $600,000 funding round from investors like Janngo Capital and Vastly Valuable Ventures, earmarked for expanding credit data services across East Africa.

Synergy Between Two Fintech Leaders

CreditChek helps lenders evaluate borrowers by aggregating data from various sources – financial institutions, credit bureaus, and alternative providers. Algosys complements this offering with its core banking and lending software tailored to Uganda’s financial landscape, including microfinance institutions (MFIs) and savings & credit cooperatives (SACCOs).

Before the acquisition, Algosys had already partnered with 22 Ugandan financial institutions, facilitating over 10,000 SACCO loans. Their platform covers loan origination, portfolio management, savings, deposits, reporting, and credit checks – creating a natural synergy with CreditChek’s assessment services.

Building a Complete Lending Ecosystem

CreditChek’s vision extends beyond providing data to lenders; they aim to offer a holistic system that supports the entire lending lifecycle—from initial customer acquisition through risk assessment, loan approval, disbursement, and ongoing management. This strategy aligns with their growth trajectory towards becoming a one-stop shop for financial institutions in Africa.

In Uganda’s context, where mobile money transactions generate significant alternative data outside traditional banking channels, this integrated approach is particularly valuable. CreditChek aims to leverage diverse data sources—including transaction history and digital footprints—to help lenders make informed decisions about customers with limited formal credit records.
