dLocal Secures Key License for Deeper Payments Integration in Ghana
The Uruguayan payments company dLocal has been granted an Enhanced Payment Service Provider (EPSP) license by the Bank of Ghana, marking a significant step in its African expansion. This regulatory approval allows dLocal to operate more of its payment business directly within Ghana, rather than through third-party partners.
Expanding Local Capabilities
With this EPSP license, dLocal can now offer a full suite of payment services including:
- Local payment collections
- Merchant acquisitions
- Mobile money acceptance
- Bank transfer processing
- Local payouts via bank accounts and mobile wallets
The timing aligns with Ghana’s rapidly growing digital payments market, which processed GH¢4.54 trillion ($397 billion) in transactions in 2023—a 51% increase from the previous year. Internet banking also saw substantial growth.
Strategic Implications for dLocal and Ghana’s Digital Economy
“This is not simply a change in branding or corporate structure,” said Eric Kortey, Country Manager at dLocal Ghana. “It’s a meaningful step toward building a more reliable, transparent, and locally accountable payments infrastructure.” The license provides greater control over operations and strengthens relationships with local banks and partners.
The move positions dLocal alongside other major players like Paystack, Flutterwave, and Fincra who have also secured enhanced payment licenses in Ghana. This concentration of licensed providers signals the growing importance of direct regulatory access for companies serving Ghana’s digital economy.
dLocal’s “One dLocal” platform allows merchants to integrate once and operate across multiple emerging markets—a key advantage as businesses seek efficient ways to expand digitally.
