Equity Bank Launches EMMA Wallet to Capture Everyday Payments

As digital banking transforms East Africa, banks are facing a new challenge: retaining customer transactions beyond traditional channels. With over 90% of retail transactions now occurring outside branches at Kenya’s tier-1 lenders, institutions like Equity Bank need innovative solutions to remain competitive.

Equity Bank is responding with EMMA, a digital wallet launched through its fintech arm, Finserve Africa. Available via Android app, USSD, or Equitel SIM toolkit, EMMA offers features like peer-to-peer payments, bill payments, airtime purchase, instant loans, and savings—all in one platform.

Beyond Traditional Banking

EMMA represents a strategic shift for Equity Bank. Rather than replacing existing services, it aims to capture the growing share of everyday transactions moving outside traditional banking systems. While banks still hold most deposits, mobile operators and fintechs are increasingly handling payments.

By keeping more transactions within its ecosystem, Equity can:

  • Retain customer data for improved lending models
  • Generate additional revenue streams from transaction fees
  • Position itself for cross-border finance opportunities

Open Interoperability & Embedded Finance

The EMMA app is designed with open interoperability in mind. Users can seamlessly move funds between:

  • Safaricom’s M-PESA merchant ecosystem
  • Airtel Money
  • Commercial bank accounts
  • Unregistered recipients

This approach reflects a broader industry trend where incumbents establish independent digital platforms to capture underserved market segments. Other Kenyan banks like Absa (with Absa Next) and NCBA Group (with LOOP) are pursuing similar strategies.

With its focus on embedded finance and open utility, EMMA aims to become a central payment hub for Kenya’s digitally active population—especially the 75% under 35 who show a preference for mobile money solutions.
