FNB Introduces Curated Cryptocurrency Trading Within Existing Banking Platform

First National Bank (FNB) has launched cryptocurrency trading services for its nine million retail customers in South Africa, becoming the latest major financial institution to embrace digital assets. The new offering allows customers to buy and sell five cryptocurrencies – Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and USDT – with a minimum investment of just R10.

The service operates through FNB’s existing Share Saver, Share Builder, Share Investor, and Share Zero products, providing a familiar interface for users. All crypto transactions occur within the bank’s secure environment, utilizing Johannesburg-based exchange VALR which is licensed by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA).

Key Features of FNB’s Crypto Offering

  • Limited Portability: Customers cannot transfer crypto assets in or out of the platform; all holdings remain within FNB’s ecosystem.
  • Curated Selection: Only five specific cryptocurrencies are available for trading, providing a managed investment option.
  • Security Focus: The walled-garden approach enhances security and simplifies compliance with exchange control regulations.

Implications for African Markets

South Africa’s progressive regulatory framework has enabled this innovation. As of December 2023, the FSCA had approved 300 crypto asset service provider licenses out of 512 applications. This approach could serve as a model for banks across the continent seeking to offer digital assets while managing risk.

Nigeria’s central bank recently lifted restrictions on banks serving licensed crypto firms, and Kenya has enacted legislation regulating virtual asset service providers. With clear regulatory pathways emerging in several African markets, similar partnerships between banks and exchanges may become more common.
