Powering Payments with Stability
As digital commerce expands across Africa, payment infrastructure companies are seeking solutions that offer both speed and reliability. Flutterwave, a leading African payments gateway, has quietly built an extensive stablecoin strategy over the past five years—one that positions them to facilitate seamless global transactions.
Flutterwave’s approach is guided by a key principle: “stablecoins as rails, not products.” This means using stablecoins (digital currencies pegged to assets like the US dollar) to optimize their existing payment infrastructure rather than creating standalone crypto offerings. Customers using Flutterwave for Business or Send App experience this through faster settlements and expanded currency options without needing any blockchain expertise.
Building a Foundation with Stablecoins
The company began exploring USDC (a USD-backed stablecoin) in October 2021 for Africa–Europe remittances via Stellar. By April 2025, they joined Circle Payments Network as a design partner—one of the first African fintechs to do so—gaining access to Circle’s settlement system for financial institutions.
The Orchestration Business
While customers may not see the blockchain behind the scenes, Flutterwave manages complex operations including:
- Determining which asset moves money across borders
- Selecting optimal networks and wallets
- Ensuring liquidity and cost efficiency
- Managing conversions between stablecoins and fiat currencies
This “orchestration” business aligns with Flutterwave’s decade-long mission to connect diverse payment systems—banks, cards, mobile money—into a unified platform.
